Ministry Residency Program

MINISTRY RESIDENCY

The Residency program at Second Baptist Church is designed to prepare and equip college and seminary graduates to serve and lead in and through the local church. This two-year program will involve hands-on experiential learning, instruction, and mentoring by veteran Pastors and church staff members. The Residency involves:

  1. Intentional growth and development. Each Resident will be assisted by Mentors who will support and help them throughout their time on staff.  Regular times of instruction and training will be a required part of the program as well.
  2. A clear and obvious “path forward” in their job. The Residency is a two-year ministry opportunity that serves as a fair picture of their skills, abilities, and character. Our hope is that at the end of the two-year commitment, our Residents will move into a long-term ministry position on our church staff.
  3. Residents will receive full-time compensation (Salary and Medical/Life Insurance) for their service.

The Residency program includes many different areas of ministry, with the priority focus on the Children’s, Students, and Adult areas of ministry.  The Residents will be assigned to work at one of our six church campuses in the city of Houston, and will have direct supervisors at the campus level, in addition to our Global Residency Team.

MENTORING/TRAINING
The Mentoring / Training program includes the following:

  • Once a month class meeting for all Residents.
  • Ongoing staff development and training that all of our church staff participates in throughout the year.
  • Residents are assigned a Mentor from their assigned campus. The Mentors/Residents will meet at least once a month for encouragement, support, and prayer. This arrangement will last for six months, at which time they are assigned a new Mentor to partner with.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Residents need to have a vibrant faith relationship with Jesus Christ, a love for people, and a commitment to grow and develop in their ministry skills and abilities.
  2. Residents must sense a clear calling to full-time vocational ministry.
  3. Residents need to be a college graduate or have finished seminary/graduate school. In some cases, students who have one year or less of school remaining (and can do the remaining work online) can apply for the Residency.
