Your Generosity Is an Act of Worship

Your Generosity Is an Act of Worship

The Tithe

The tithe, meaning "a tenth," is the first ten percent of our income dedicated to God. Throughout Scripture, tithing is presented as an act of worship that acknowledges God's ownership over all we have. God commands us to "bring" the whole tithe—not "give" it. This distinction matters. When we give a gift, we transfer ownership of something we own. But the truth is, everything already belongs to God.

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the Lord of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows."
MALACHI 3:10

Put God to the Test

Malachi 3:10 contains something remarkable—God invites us to test Him. He challenges us to bring the whole tithe and watch Him open the windows of heaven to pour out blessings until they overflow. This is the only place in Scripture where God says, "Put Me to the test." We can be confident that as we trust God with what He has entrusted to us, His blessings will overflow.

Treasures in Heaven

Jesus invites us to think differently about money: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19–21) What we accumulate here is temporary, but what we invest in God's kingdom lasts forever.
